Painter and illustrator, Standish Backus Jr. was born in Detroit, Michigan on April 5, 1910. After studying at Princeton University and Universtiy of Munich, Backus settled in Santa Barbara in 1935 and then neighboring Montecito. He served as a naval officer in the Pacific during WWII. He was a teacher at University of California Extension in 1947-48 and the official artist for Admiral Byrd's expedition to the South Pole, 1955-56.

Member: California Watercolor Society; American Watercolor Society.

Exhibitied: Golden Gate International Exposition, 1939; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 1938-40.

Awards: Oakland Art Gallery, 1939; California Watercolor Society, 1940; California State Fair, 1948-49.
