Standish Backus Jr.
(1910-1989)



Painter and illustrator, Standish Backus Jr. was born in Detroit, Michigan on April 5, 1910. After studying at Princeton University and Universtiy of Munich, Backus settled in Santa Barbara in 1935 and then neighboring Montecito. He served as a naval officer in the Pacific during WWII. He was a teacher at University of California Extension in 1947-48 and the official artist for Admiral Byrd's expedition to the South Pole, 1955-56.
