The Appellations Of California Wine - South Coast
An area further south, loosely called the Southern California Region, includes seven AVAs that cover 270,000 acres in Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties.
This warm southern California area is moderated by the Pacific Ocean, and Chardonnay has historically been the grape of choice. Pierce’s diseas caused significant damage to the area in the late 1900s and the area is now experimenting with Rhone, Italina and Iberian grapes. Sub-AVAs include Cucamonga Valley, Malibu-Newton Canyon, San Pasquel Valley and Temecula Valley.
