John Carl Doemling was born in Wuerzburg, Bavaria around 1892. Doemling spent his early years in a local seminary in preparation to become a priest; however, by age 12 he had opted to pursue an art career. He studied art in Wuerzburg and, while in his teens, left home and supported himself by restoring paintings in churches and monasteries in Switzerland, Italy, and France. In 1911 he immigrated to Chicago where he found work as a letterer for the Pullman Car Company while studying at the Art Institute of Chicago. There he became an active member of the Palette & Chisel Club. During the 1920s he made many trips to art colonies throughout the United States including Los Angeles and Laguna Beach. In 1927, he had plans to take up permanent residence in Laguna Beach where he was a member of the local art association. Doemling moved to Chicago in 1928, where he died in 1955.

Exhibited: Palette & Chisel Club, 1919 (solo); Painters & Sculptors of Los Angeles, 1923.
